Coverage and thoughts on the June 1, 2012 episode of Smackdown

The show starts with Sheamus coming to the ring. He says that after Alberto won the 3 way last week to become the number one contender for the World Title, he thought he would congratulate him the way he knows how. They show Del Rio winning the 3 way from last week followed by Sheamus clubbing Del Rio from behind. Sheamus says he was letting Del Rio what he had gotten himself into. Sheamus says that he has no intention of kissing Alberto’s rear end because he intends to kick it. Sheamus then says that Del Rio thinks he is better than everyone and that money can buy anything. Then Sheamus says that money can’t buy him everything and it sure can’t buy him the World Title. Then David Otunga comes to the ring. Sheamus sarcastically says it’s great to see him. Then Sheamus asks Otunga how his head is after he kicked him Monday. Otunga says he’s out here on behalf of Johnny Ace for another matter. First he would like to show some video evidence from 2 weeks ago. They reshow Raw from last Monday where Sheamus came to the ring and bumped into Johnny. Then Otunga mentions that last week Johnny had Eve on the show to get an apology from Sheamus and that never happened. Then Otunga says that he’s not asking Sheamus to apologize, he’s ordering him to. Sheamus says this isn’t Starbucks where you order coffee. Then Sheamus says that if Otunga tries ordering him around he will be picking his coffee cup out of his arse for the next 2 weeks. Then Sheamus says that if Johnny wants an apology then he should get on his power scooter and wheel himself to the ring and ask for an apology right to Sheamus’ face. Otunga says that Sheamus might be the whitest bulb but he isn’t the brightest. Then he says for Sheamus to reconsider and then Alberto Del Rio comes out. Del Rio tells Otunga that he is wasting his time and his breath because he won’t an apology from Sheamus (this peasant). Then Del Rio says that Sheamus is nothing but a street hooligan. Del Rio then says that is why people like Sheamus end up working for people like himself & Otunga. Then he tells Otunga not to worry because Sheamus will be sorry. Sheamus will be very sorry because at No Way Out he will be the new World Champion. Otunga thanks Del Rio and says that he appreciates the sentiment. Then Otunga says that Sheamus needs more of an immediate consequence. He then says that Johnny Ace has allowed Del Rio to pick Sheamus’ opponent for tonight. Then Sheamus says that he is sorry, but not sorry about what he did to Johnny. Then he gives Otunga a Brogue kick. Del Rio then rolls out of the ring and heads up the ramp to the back. Then Sheamus kneels over Otunga and says that he is sorry for what he is about to do to him. Then he tells Del Rio to never trust a hooligan. This was a decent opening segment.

Sin Cara vs. Heath Slater. Sin Cara gets the pin. This was a solid match.

They reshow Smackdown from 2 weeks ago when Daniel Bryan hit Kane with a chair and then Kane choke slammed Punk.

Before the next match starts Sandow gets the mic and says that he is again standing before an ignoramus. He says that he will not face Zeke tonight. “You’re welcome.” Sandow goes to leave but Zeke throws him back in the ring.

Ezekiel Jackson vs. Damien Sandow. Sandow gets the pin. This was mostly a squash. Zeke got in some offense but this was all about continuing to get Sandow over.

Alberto Del Rio & Ricardo Rodriguez are backstage trying to think of who Sheamus can face later. Then Dolph Ziggler comes in and asks to face Sheamus. Del Rio agrees. This was decent.

2 unknown guys named Bryan Shelton & Chris Lyons are in the ring and they get the mic and cut the usual promo before jobbing to Ryback. This is stale.

Ryback vs. Bryan Shelton & Chris Lyons. Ryback gets the easy pin. This was the typical meaningless Ryback squashes to unknowns match.

Vickie Guerrero comes out and says that tonight she has made a special arrangement. Then Dolph comes out and that tonight he beats the World Champion.

World Champion Sheamus vs. Dolph Ziggler. Sheamus gets the pin. This was a good match. Swagger came out but Sheamus threw Dolph into him.

Matt Striker interviews CM Punk about Punk’s title match with Kane. Punk says that “Little Johnny” can order him around all he wants. Punk says he likes competition. Then Punk says that Johnny is doing this because he wants the WWE Title anywhere but around Punk’s waist because he embarrasses Johnny. Punk then says that he represents everything that Johnny doesn’t like in this world, which is ok with Punk because he doesn’t anything do with Johnny. Then Punk says that Johnny is everything that he can’t stand in this world. Then he says tat Kane is tough and scary. Then Punk says that tonight the best in the world make the demon go to sleep. This was a solid promo.

U.S. Champion Santino Marella & Zack Ryder vs. Titus O’Neil & Darren Young. Marella & Ryder win when Santino pins Darren. This was a short match and I have no idea why they had Titus & Daren lose. Afterwards Big Show comes out and flattens Marella & Ryder. Show threw Ryder into the ringside barrier and then the steel steps. Then Big Show brings the steel steps up the ramp. Ryder gets in a bit of offense but Show gets the upper hand. Then Big Show slams Ryder onto the steps. Then he flips the steps over and Ryder falls on the ramp. Then Show takes the steps to the stage. Then he beats on Santino and locks in a Camel Clutch with Santino on the steel steps. Then he gives Santino the knock out punch.

AJ is backstage in her CM Punk t-shirt and wrist bands. Then Daniel Bryan comes by and says that Punk doesn’t care about AJ and is using her. AJ says that Daniel is jealous and she asks what does Daniel care what she does. Bryan says that he doesn’t but he did once, which is more than he can say for Punk. This was a good backstage segment.

Christian is on commentary for the next match. They show him beating Cody Rhodes for the Intercontinental Title.

Tyson Kidd vs. Cody Rhodes. Cody gets the pin. This was a good but short match. Afterwards Cody goes to the outside. Christian takes his head set off. The face off and Christian holds up the Intercontinental Title.

WWE Champion CM Punk vs. Kane for the Title. The match goes to a no finish when Daniel Bryan comes out and attacks both guys. AJ came to ringside to watch. Then Daniel Bryan came out and Punk dove onto him on the outside. Then Kane went to choke slam Punk but Punk gave him a roundhouse kick. A bit later Daniel dropkicked both guys from the top rope and that led to the no finish. Afterwards Daniel stomped on Punk and chanted yes after each stomp. Then Daniel roundhouse kicked Punk in the corner and chanted yes after each kick. Then he Irish whipped Punk into the opposite turnbuckle but Punk got his feet up and kicked Daniel. The Punk was going to give Daniel the GTS but Kane came in and grabbed both guys by their throats and choke slammed them both. Kane stood over both guys as his pyro went off. Kane then left the ring and going to head up the ramp but then Johnny Ace and Eve came out. Johnny said that at No Way Out it will now be Punk vs. Daniel vs. Kane for the WWE Title. Punk & Daniel lay on the mat while AJ has the usual upset look on her face to end the show.

I thought this was a mixed bag show overall. It wasn’t as good as last week’s but it was certainly better than Raw. The opening segment was ok and the Punk-Kane match followed by Daniel Bryan coming in was decent too. Sheamus-Dolph was a good match. That was the best part of the show. Tyson-Cody was good but too short. I liked the backstage bit with Daniel Bryan & AJ too. I have no idea why they had Titus O’Neil & Daren Young lose to Santino & Ryder. Then Big Show flattening the comedy jobbers was ok to continue to get Big Show over but it didn’t do Santino or Ryder any favors. Zeke-Sandow was mostly a squash. I don’t know why they added Kane to the Punk-Bryan match at No Way Out. Hopefully Punk or Daniel will walk out Champion. On the whole I thought this was a mediocre show.
